German sock yarn seems to only come in variegated or tweed colors. I
bought the huge skein (enough to make a pair of socks) for $9.50 in Taos,
New Mexico. I believe it also comes in smaller skeins.
I do find this yarn unusually elastic. I'm making a pair of men's socks on size 2 dpns and using a cast on of 60 stitches makes a pretty loose sock. It is hard to find needles small enough to make a really dense fabric with it - it looks pretty loose with size 1 dpns although it is clearly a fingering weight yarn. The variegated colors are quite nice.
