Note: socks can be made with any number of sts that are a multiple of 4.

Wyib - with yarn in back

Aitp - as if to purl

Ridge Check Pattern (minor variation of B. Walker's ridge check pattern) :

Rnd 1, 2 (color A): *K 3, sl 1 wyib aitp, rep from * to end

Rnd 3 (color A): K

Rnd 4, 5 (color B): *K 3, sl 1 wyib aitp, rep from * to end

Rnd 6 (color B): K

CO 64 w/ color A.

Join being careful not to twist.

K2, p2 rib for 2.5 ins.

Join color B.

Work in ridge check for 4.5 ins. or desired length of cuff. End with rows 1
or 2. Continue with color A slipping color B for another 16 sts.

Note: this is to bring color B into position for the gusset.

Divide for heel:

Put half (32) sts aside for the instep. Purl back using color A on 32 heel

Heel flap (worked only in color A)

Knitting back and forth on 32 sts, work the following 2 rows 16 times:

Row 1: *sl 1, k 1, rep from * to end

Row 2: sl 1, p to end

Turn heel:

Row 1: sl 1, k 17, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn

Row 2: sl 1, p 5, p 2 tog, p 1, turn

Row 3: *sl 1, k 1, rep from * to 1 st before end of row 1 (there will be a
gap between these sts and the remaining ones), sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn

Row 4: sl 1, p to 1 st before end of row 2 sts (again there will be a gap
here), p 2 tog, p1, turn

Rep rows 3 and 4 consuming 2 additional sts from across 'the gap' on each
row until all sts have been incorporated into the heel. The slipping of
every other st on the RS rows creates a eye-of-partridge effect.

RS: K across the heel sts; pick up 16 sts along side of heel flap; work 32
instep sts in ridge check pattern, picking up with the next row of the
pattern; pick up 16 sts along other side of heel flap.

Arrange work on needles as follows:

Half of heel sts + 1 gusset on 1 needle.

Instep sts divided on 1 or 2 needles.

Remaining gusset + other half of heel sts on last needle.

Note: In working the gusset and foot, the entire rnd is worked in either
color A or color B based on which color is used in the ridge check pattern.
Colors are switched just before the beg of the instep sts.

Gusset: (worked in both colors)

Rnd 1: K to 3 sts before beg of instep; K 2 tog, K 1; work instep sts in
pattern; K 1, ssk; k to end of rnd

Rnd 2: K to beg of instep sts; work instep sts in pattern; K 1, K 1 tbl, K
to end of rnd

Rep rnds 1and 2 until there are 16 sts left on each needle [64 sts total]

Continue on 64 sts for 2 ins less than the desired length of the foot,
working instep sts in pattern and sole sts in st. st. changing colors every
3 rnds as indicated by ridge check pattern. Cut B yarn..

Toe: (worked only in color A)

Note: Half the sts form the sole on 2 ndls and half the sts form the top of
the foot on the other 2 ndls. Toe decreases are worked on both sides of the
sole and the top of the foot.

Rnd 1: K 1, ssk, K to 3 sts before the end of the sole, K 2 tog, K 1; K 1,
ssk, K to 3 sts before the end of the rnd, K 2 tog, K 1

Rnd 2: K 1, K 1 tbl, K to 3 sts before end of rnd, K 1 tbl, K 1

Rep rnds 1 and 2 until half the sts are left [32 sts]

Then rep rnd 1 only till 12 sts remain.

Note: To keep the ssk's looking more like the k 2 tog's, sl 1 st as if to
purl, next st as if to knit, insert rt ndl as usual into 2 sl sts on left
ndl point and k 2 sl sts tog.

Join sole and top of foot sts tog using Kitchener st or 3 ndl bind off.

Cut yarn and finish off ends.
