I am so glad that I found this forum to ask someone about this! I live in a small town and there are no knit shops close by.
Where exactly should I be measuring when I measure the foot of the sock before starting the toe? I have been measuring from the bottom of the foot starting right at the "v" where the heel turning starts up to the end. Is this OK or should they be measured from the side which makes them about 1/2 inch longer overall? So far, the ones I have made, do seem to fit well?
Welcoming any discussion or help here.
Thanks

I usually measure from the bottom of the foot from the heel turn. If I hold the sock on the bottom up I measure from the heel turn out. If I lay the sock on it's side, I measure, again from the heel turn out to where I have the sock on the needles.

My husband's feet are 10 inches long. He likes snug socks. I measure the progression of the foot before the toe at 7 inches. I know the toes will be at least 2 and 1/2 inches so I stop the foot at 7 inches. I then begin the toe knitting to 2 1/2 inches and close the toe. The math comes out to 9 1/2 inches but again, he does not like saggy socks and to make the sock and even 10 inches for him is too big, even though that is his actual foot length.

The heel turn is the key for me measurement wise. It has worked thus far.

Is that understandable?

my fave pattern has me measuring the foot from the pick up row after turning the heel Seems to work for us here. Smile where they prefer looser socks I guess. Smile
but we maybe have a bit longer feet, 12 and 13 year old girls are wearing ladies size 7 and 8 already. :S

Yes, thanks to you both!
I am measuring with the bottom up from the start of the heel turn to the needles. Must be o.k.!
