Has anyone every used the Knit Piks "Palette" fingering weight yarn? I was looking at it for socks for my daughter who is like the princess from the story "Princess and the Pea"...nothing scratchy or bumpy. It's $1.99 a skein...just wondered about the quality/softness for socks.

| I was wondering about the 'palette' also. I have heard that getting some nylon in your yarn helps it wear longer. But I was also wondering about making the leg in palette and the foot in hard-wearing essential. |

[quote="crazy4sox"]I made some socks for the man-o-the house with their Essential yarn
What size needles did you use for your man's socks with this Essential yarn? I'd love to make my husband a pair of socks, and if your guy liked the ones you made, maybe I'll try to make some like them for my husband. Thanks.

I made my husband's socks with the grey Essentials and he loves them. They are soft and wash very well
He has a 91/2 sized foot so I used 76 stitch cast on with a size 2 needles. I made the ribbing with the size two and switched to a size 3 for the body of the sock. His only suggestion was that I rib the entire foot all the way to the start of the toe. That gives the sock a bit more tightness. (He likes snug socks with no loose spots).
He asked that if I make them again to use more yarn for the ribbing and the leg. He can't wear the socks with his work boots bacause the ribbing at the top is too short. I think next time I make socks with the Essentials for him I will use a size 1 for the ribbing and a 2 for the body of the sock.
WILL DO HUBBY!

The pair I made with KnitPick Essentials was in a camel color with 2x2 ribbing all the way down the leg and the top of the foot to the last two inches. I think I used size 1 needles for all of it but can't swear to it. My guy likes the leg to be about 8 inches above the start of the heel flap so that boots will work with these socks. I have used a basic Lucy Neatby pattern for his socks and he likes it above the others I've tried. He has some troubles with feet swelling sometimes and I think the ribbing provides maximum stretchiness.
Since we started with tame dark colors, he has branched out to fairly wild self-stripes (Bernat Army Hot) and others too. He shows them off to anyone who notices and sometimes draws people's attention to them so he can brag on me. What a sweetie!

Yes, order away! Most of my sock knitting is done with Knit Picks yarn. I pretty much always get the right gauge using #2 needles needed for the pattern I use, and even #1 DPNs for a better fabric.
I have used all of their merino sock yarns, the Essentials, Simple Stripes and Parade. I've read posts by other knitters complaining that Parade gave them socks that were too big when using the recommended size needles (it's sport weight) so I went down a needle size and had no problem.
It looks like they only offered the sock yarn sampler for one catalog: it's not in their latest one or on their website. What's up with that?! |

I seldom follow what the "recommended" needles for a pattern call for anyway. I have men at do not have "average" feet, so why should I do the "recommended" anything
I do what I must to make my guys happy
Aint that what life's about anyway??? If their feet are happy, so is my mind.

Here's the link:

Someone posted the catalog number and that's the only way I can get it on their website - # 40027 .
It appears to still be available.... what a steal at $5 a pair of socks! _________________ SK Rescue Site

It's still on their website. You have to get to the Simple Stripes page to find it.

There's a link for the Sampler there. _________________ Pat Harper, Carencro LA

| I just ordered some palette in Mint for some cute spring ankle socks. I haven't knit with Palette yet but people on the Knitters Review forum have been posting favorable comments on using it for socks. |
