I generally buy acrylic yarn for making socks, have made a bunch of really fun socks. But now I am looking to use different types. I have ordered sock yarn from herrschners and after that...no idea where to look for different yarns.
So what has been your favorite to work with? Least favorite? Most difficult? Easiest?? _________________ MelissaE

Goodness, there are lots of places to find sock yarn, but unfortunately most of them are online stores.
I've ordered it from Dutch Obsessions (Astrid's Ebay store), Simply Socks, Knitpicks, Herrschners, and Patternworks.
I heard Hobby Lobby was going to stop selling the Lion Brand Magic Stripe, so that leaves only the LYS and they don't carry the solid colors, just the self-striping yarns.
Hancock Fabrics has Magic Stripe also, and the LYS has a limited supply of it.
Right now a good portion of my sock yarn stash consists of Simple Stripe from Knitpicks, but I do now have two skeins of Opal I received yesterday, as well as some Patons Kroy I ordered from Herrshner's. Then there's the yarns I have only one or two skeins of (Fixations, Sockotta, Regia cotton, Steinbach Wolle, etc).
Right now I'm working on two different pairs of socks. One is for a KAL, and they're being knitted with the Kroy yarn, and the other is for my hubby out of Lorna's Laces Bee Stripe (shepherd sock yarn). _________________ Pat Harper, Carencro LA

I just ordered some needles from Angelika's
http://www.yarn-store.com/yarn.html
...they have excellent customer service and ship usps priority. I got my order in 3 days. They sell a huge variety of Lorna's Laces Shephard Sock yarn. I haven't used this yarn YET. They sent me some samples. The Shephard Sock yarn seems to be really nice. So next time I need yarn I will definitely be ordering some from them! They also have many other yarns.
I also ordered 3 hanks from Simplysockyarn.com. Also very quick shipping...(they also ship usps priority). Just recieved my order yesterday...in 3 days. Beautiful yarn! I ordered some Cherry Tree Hill superwash yarn, and 2 hanks of Fleece artist yarn.

Just don't use anything made with karakul! I'm in the middle of a pair of dress socks for an uncle, and I'm using Rowan's 4-ply Soft. Squishy, cuddly, and good stitch definition. Might be a little soft for extended wear, but hey. His feet will be happy while they last! I also made bed socks for my sister using Creative Focus, a yarn by Nashua. It's a worsted-weight singles with 75% wool and 25% alpaca. Not meant for regular wear, but fun to work with and very warm! Got both of these at the LYS. If it's not outrageously priced, try anything once! Get a small amount and make little kid socks to get an idea of it's workability. |

I like to use Knitpicks Essential superwash sock yarn and Bernats acryllic sox yarns. Bernats has a pretty good assortment that I buy from Herschnerrs or Hobby Lobby. I keep hearing about Red Hearts Baby Soft with such pretty colors and I think I'll give them a try for my Spring Soxs. I really like the Superwash yarns now though.

My current favorite yarn is Regia Silk. It is 20% silk, 55% wool, and 25% polyamid (polyester? nylon?) It is very soft with excellant elasticity and pulls out of the skein very evenly without clumps. The socks knit up very cushiony and are machine wash and dry. My only complaint is the colors - or at least those at my LYS - are masculine colors-grey, navy, black, dark green, off white, and maroon.
