Generally speaking, how long does it take you to knit a pair of socks?
I think I might be pretty slow. Or maybe I am just impatient??
For hubby (likes calf high) takes me a week
For kids ( 6& 3) takes two or three days
For baby (he's 10 mos) two days
For me (I like just above ankle high) three to four days.
I have been knitting socks for about 4 years and gosh it seems like I will never pick up speed. I was wondering how long it takes anyone else to do. _________________ MelissaE

| I usually only knit in the evening so I figure a sock per week, therefore, 2 weeks to make a pair. |

When I knit, I tend to get a little compulsive.
A pair of calf length adult socks in a pattern that is exciting and just challenging enough to keep my interest will take me about three days. Socks for my wool sock loving 6 yr old boy: 1 day. But you should see my house after those days! Ack! Laundry piled to the ceiling, counter full of dishes, starving children and hubby (well not quite).
When I manage to be a little more disciplined it will take me a week or two depending on how busy my non-knitting life is.
And then there's the pair of socks I'm working on for my daughter. I hate them. I've been at them over a month already. Not that they are difficult. I just hate them so much I've been knitting other things! |

I am Mrs. Start and Stop.
I begin a pair.....and.....my hands go to sleep because of CP, so I stop.
I start and, Brian needs to go to school for the week and I stop.
I start and, hubby says, "bunny - take Brian to work this week", and I stop.
I start and the house is a wreck, pantry is empty, no food in the big white box that is cold, and so I stop...
One month later, I am finally putting the toes in my son's socks......
OOOhhh Welllll

With an interesting pattern, be it lace or self-pattern, and no CTS acting up it takes 5-7 days. Dark colors tend to take longer I think, maybe because of trying to see the stitches.
Happy Knitting

| I am a careful, no, maybe deliberate, well just make that a slow knitter who usually knits only at night, and not every night on socks - so about 10 - 12 days for me. |

I think the fastest I've ever knit a pair of socks was my first pair, that took me a week Since then I've had lots of classes and afterschool stuff doing, so my most recent pair took me 3 weeks to finally finish! |

Somebody at my Knit Guild meeting said, in a negative way, that it takes about 20 hours to knit a sock on size 1 needles. After I thought about it, I figure that that's a realistic figure for me with plain socks. I'm not a fast knitter as i like to stop and admire what I've done way too much. Also don't do Continental style which is supposed to be faster.
Fancy socks, like lace patterns, take longer, but you always learn something new. |

I pop out socks the way my sil pops out babies: one every 2 years!
Slight exaggeration, but I think you sound FAST!
I started a sock on New Year's Day .... and finished it last week. |

Finish? As in, "to be done with a project"? Hm. What a concept. Let's see...large gauge, two days. Toddler size, a few hours. Size 1 dpns and superfine black yarn for an uncle who like tall socks for his big feet, an ETERNITY! But he's never had a handknit pair, so it'll be worth it. |

MelissaE - I think you sound pretty fast! The times you noted are really good, if you ask me. I'm not sure exactly how much more speed one can pick up on knitting socks--it just seems like you can only go so fast to get a pair done. I estimate 10-14 days to complete a pair, and if I happen to get a lot more spare time to fit in my knitting, then I get them done sooner and I'm super happy! For the most part, I've been using Sockotta yarn on #1 dpn's. The length of the cuff definitely affects the finishing time. I am just now really getting "into" socks. I took a class about 1-1/2 yrs. ago, knitted two pair that turned out so-so, put it away for quite a while and knitted other things, and in the last couple of months picked it up again and now, I CAN'T STOP KNITTING SOCKS! Thanks for sharing your sock knitting times with us - it was quite interesting!

I'm still new to this, but the thing that captured me was the feeling of contentment when I knit a stitch...that's right, just one stitch, followed by another stitch. I am not a person who usually pays such attention to detail...I'm more of a global thinker, but somehow I've been captured by the Zen of Sock Knitting. Just enjoy what you are doing while you're doing it...the socks get done eventually and you'll have had a great time doing it. _________________ Swatts |
