So sorry NQ! But you gave your fur-baby lots of love and a cherished life, how wonderful is that!

Daughter just got back from the vet with our older cat...Dodger (After the book we were reading to the kids when they were small...Oliver Twist).

The bad... he has hypothyroidism. He's been very vocal and grumpy and losing a bit of weight and clearing his throat so to speak. The good...its common in older cats and fully treatable (pills; 50cts a day, a bargain if he will calm down!) and the vet said, looking at his test results, if he didn't know better the rest of his functions are like a 3 yr old cat! Dodger is almost 16!
I was very worried after what we worked through with Gandalf's expensive illness so having a 'normal' report like this was wonderful. I am so relieved.

My newest furr baby is doing well. She and Betsie are settling in and not sniping so much at each other.
Hannah is a gorgeous little mini-daschund. She is long haired and is a dapple. One eye is rimmed in blue. She is such a loving little thing that I am going to be taking her to the nursing home with me. The residents will absolutely love her.
She misses Joan but is doing ok. She has already bonded with me.

At home Dodger is doing great on his meds and plump Arwen (okay we should have named her after a chubby Hobbit not a sleek Elven princess ) is more comfortable with her bed on the floor so she doesn't need to jump. Attempts to help her lose weight have only helped a tiny bit. (Cheer up Arwen, I know how that feels )

My oldest has brought home a new pet. Found him running around in circles on the road and named him Dilios Sparta. Why you ask?! He (I assume its a he) is a one eyed common mouse, lame in one leg (hence the circles) and that is a character from the movie 300 who loses one eye. Sigh... he is in the garage in an old large aquarium with a new screen lid truly living it up now. I didn't think he would survive but its been a week and the injuries were old and healed. Amazing he made it out in the real world. My DD seems to have no plans to let him take his chances in nature. Ah well. He is kind of cute when he rests in his food dish eating peanut butter and surrounded by seeds. Hmm reminds me of Arwen.

Viola, We found a wild mouse for three and a half years now. His name is Jack and he lost a eye, too, no damaged leg though. We actually found him twice, let him go the first time and a cat ours or a stray got a hold of him and his eye was hang out of its socket, it did heal and he is just fine. We did get a wheel for him to run in and he does. Just didn't think we would have him this long as their life span is only about 2 years and this December we will have had him for 4 years. Good luck with you new little mousie. We give Jack raw peanuts every once in a while.

Oh my...I had read two years was their longest lifespan so thought fine. I guess that's in the 'wild', not pampered like these two. If he makes it to the winter we'll need to rethink his living location. I think the garage will get too cold and the cats are already sent to the basement at night because they insist on waking (only me!) for a 5am feeding!

I told my daughter about the wheel for him to run in and she gave me that look only your kids can give you and said that would be cruel. Oh yeah, I forgot about his bad leg.

Opps, so did I. Still if he can get around he needs something so he can get some exercise. Maybe his leg will get better.

Hannah went to the nursing home with me 3 days before the heat hit. I opted to leave her home until it is cooler.
She was a big hit, especially with the Alzheimer's residents.

Judy its so nice you make those visits. When I'm with Retirement home clients I notice when someone walks in with a dog the smiles just keep coming.

On sad news front I discovered Dilios Sparta had succumbed this morning and was given an honourable mouse burial in my raspberry patch where I'm sure he would have been very pleased. He died happy and full of peanut butter and specialty mouse food and daughter is fine and feels good about making his way easier.

I got her to clean all the stuff before she thinks to go looking for a new resident for the cage! The squirrels and chipmunks can have the food!

Poor little thing! At least he had some quality days before he left. I'm sure the squirrels and chipmunks will thank you too.
