For the mini socks that I have made I use the smallest needles I can and use finger to baby to lace weight yarn, then use whatever pattern that strikes my fancy at the time. Also have a book of baby/toddler socks that worked out very well. Wish I could figure out how get the jaywalker sock pattern to work.
