I have heard that socks used to be knit with "replacable heels". Does anyone have instructions in how to do this?

Is this what I see referred to as a Peasant Heel. You knit the sock in a tube, at the point the heel goes you use a piece of waste yarn for half the sock circ. When done pull out the waste yarn, pick up all the stitches including an extra one at each side to tighten things up a bit. Now begin decreasing like you would for a toe.

What Elizabeth Zimmerman called an Afterthought Heel.

Hi Everyone,

I found out recently about a method used in the 1940's or thereabouts called the Aladdin Heel.

Patons have published it again in a pattern booklet they've done called Classics in Kroy.

The method is quite ingenious. You make your heel without joining to the side of the heel flaps. Later you use a contrasting yarn (so you can find it when you want to replace the heel) to do some grafting and little seams instead. Great fun!

Hm. Their picture sure looks just like the turned heels I do!

Thanks so much for the pattern information. I was hoping to find this already figured out in a formal way. I hate reinventing things! Very Happy

My sister just bought me the Twisted Sisters Knitting Workbook. In it, it gives instructions on making an afterthought heel. I've never tried it, but the instructions are there. Good luck!
