If you are having a hard time making mini socks, this pattern might help. It is one I developed myself. I wanted to develope a miniature sock - not a mini sock exactly.
Barb's Miniature Sock Pattern
Sock should be about 3 inches along the foot and 4 1/2 inches from toe to ribbing.
Using size 1 needles and fingering weight yarn scraps, CO 24 stitches. Divide between 3 needles - 8 on each.
Knit in 2x2 ribbing for 1/2 inch only. Change to size 2 needles and knit leg of sock in stockinette stitch for 1 inch only.
Heel and heel turn
Knit 12 stitches onto one needle. Slip 1 stitch, purl back across remaining stitches. Slip 1, k 1, slip 1, k 1, across row. Repeat this heel stitch pattern until there are 8 slip stitch loops.
With RS facing you and having completed a purl row:
Slip 1, k 5, k2tog, k 1, turn.
Slip 1, p 1, p2tog, p 1, turn.
Slip 1, k 2, k2tog, k 1, turn.
Follow this sequence until all stitches are worked. End heel turn by knitting all stitches. 6 stitches should remain and you should be on the left side of the heel flap.
Gusset (Use a small crochet hook if you need to)
With needle that has the 6 heel turn stitches on it, pick up stitches in the 8 heel stitches, plus 1 to close gusset hole. With another needle, knit across 12 instep stitches. With another needle, pick up 1 stitch to close gusset hole and the 8 slip loop stitches on the right side of heel flap. Knit 3 stitches from heel turn onto this needle. Knit around all three needles. There should be 12 on each of three needles.
Gusset Decreases
Do decreases in the usual manner until you have 6 stitches on each of the heel flap needles and 12 still remaining on the instep needle.
Foot and Toe
Knit in stockinette stitch for not more than 1 inch only! If you knit the foot to more than 1 inch the miniature sock will not meet the size requiements for the Sock Swap. Do traditional toe decreases for this sock until you have 6 stitches remaining. You may kitchener the toe closed or cinch the toe closed by threading a tapestry needle through the stitches and pull tight.
Darn in all ends and send off your Sock Swap coordinator!
Please use this pattern for the 2006 Sock Swap or for yourself only. Don't sell or download this pattern for commercial use or use it for money making purposes (bazaars exc) without my permission. Thanks!
