Have any of you lovely ladies ever knitted socks in mohair? I imagine they'd be really snuggly (the cold weather here and the Winter Olympics on tv are turning my mind to being cosy cosy). As mohair usually comes with a percentage of nylon spun with it, I imagine it might work quite well as a sock yarn but I'm wondering what they would look and feel like after a few wearings and washings? Also how many grams for a pair of average size ladies' socks with, say, mid-calf cuff? You get more yardage per gram because it's quite a light yarn in terms of weight... and I 'just happen' Shocked to have 2 or 3 leftover balls from a poncho I knitted... Anybody any experience of it?

I should think you'd have to mix it with some other wool for stability. I do know the socks I knit for hubby out of wool mixed with mohair tend to felt on the sole and heel. This is why it's used so often for purses and hats for intentional felting.

Hello Yorkshire Lass!

Mohair felts at the drop of a sock (how eaily I'm amused), so make 'em big, because they won't stay that way never mind a % of nylon. That's assuming, of course, that you don't delicately suds them in the wash basin and gently push the suds out under cool water, then let them take two days to dry - I don't have the time or patience for that, so in the cold wash cycle they go inside a pillow case (to avoid little fibers on your other clothes) with the rest of whatever is going in the delicate cycle.

They make GREAT boot socks for the frozen north up here. I make them large enough to fit a man's foot, then let them shrink down to my size 7.5 foot. Knit on larger needles with yarn held double, they make wonderful felted slipper socks, too.

I'm not much help on amounts, I'm afraid. I usuaully have mohair left over from some other project and never start socks with it with full skeins - just use up bits and pieces.
